Orbit

Orbit is a lamp that allows the user to control the diffusion of light by manually rotating the upper hemisphere. Each half is sandblasted so that the bulb can be concealed and the light ratio can be changed as desired. The clear design and simple color scheme allow it to be adapted to a variety of interior styles. The durability of the glass make Orbit suitable for decades of use.

The luminaire is inspired by society’s renewed interest in space travel and pays homage to the space age design of the 1970s.

Process

The project was realized at the Gernheim glass school.

Two glass bowls were blown, cut and sandbasted by hand with the assistance of the students of the glass school.

“Orbit” got featured in the publication “The Vignelli Dialogue 02 – Translucida” from the RIT Vignelli Center for Design Studies and the Folkwang University of the Arts.
